Last Tuesday, it was that time again. PHPUG Rheinhessen met for the 33rd time since its founding. This time we were back at UDG, with the popular topic of home automation using PHP and the Raspberry Pi on the agenda, along with a talk by me about PHP archives.
Home automation
Our regular attendee Jan Unger kicked things off, using his hobby project to show us how to control a garage door with PHP on a Raspberry Pi. Why do this? Because it is fun and it works. The application shown is based on the Symfony 2 framework, and the frontend was implemented as a single-page app with AngularJS. Anyone interested in the source code can find it on GitHub.

We also got to see a video showing the system in operation. In the end, Jan was even persuaded to open his garage door directly from Mainz using his smartphone. :-)
PHP archives
Afterward, I was able to share my experiences with PHP archives, gathered over the last two years. Overall, the topic does not have quite the same broad appeal as home automation, but I think I was able to convey a little knowledge about the advantages, disadvantages, and pitfalls of Phar files.
I have published my talk here:
