Meet Magento 2016

Meet Magento 2016

After being unable to attend Meet Magento last year because of the birth of my son, nothing stood in the way of this year's event. So I headed off to Leipzig again with three colleagues. This time the event took place at the Pentahotel Leipzig. As always, the event was very well attended.

There were long queues at registration.

In my opinion, the Pentahotel suits Meet Magento better than the previous hotels. But that was not just because of the carpet :-) .

This year I did not submit a talk to Meet Magento myself. I simply wanted to present something at the Barcamp. My colleagues Alexander Steireif and Ralf Lieser, on the other hand, both had official talks in the program. All talks are now available on YouTube through a playlist.

netz98 talks

As netz98, we tried to shed some light on Magento 2.1 this year. Alexander Steireif's talk explored the ecosystem. Are there already Magento 2 modules that can be used? You can find the slides here: http://www.alexander-steireif.com/meet-magento-2016-magento-2-module-im-ueberblick/

Ralf Lieser took on the topic of "updating". In clear terms, he explained that what is actually needed is not an update but "re-platforming".

I myself presented a Magento 2 code generator for n98-magerun at the Developer Barcamp. The code generator has now landed in the "develop" branch and can be tested by anyone. Just launch "dev:console" and enter "? ". Then you will see what the thing can do.

Magento 2

As already mentioned, we deliberately focused our talks solely on Magento 2. Unfortunately, Magento 2 does not seem to have been well received everywhere yet. What really stood out to me was that, even after a year of Magento 2, the ecosystem still does not seem to have truly arrived at the new shop version. The reasons may be varied. Time and again I saw a Magento 1 login on service providers' screens. Magento itself also tried to encourage a shift with relevant talks. In fact, Magento itself was represented at Meet Magento again. The disagreements between Meet Magento and Magento seem to have been resolved, which I consider a very good sign. It can only be good for both "parties" to get along here.

As every year, I once again had some very good conversations with developers, agencies, and even a few customers. The annual "class reunion" alone makes a visit to Meet Magento worthwhile.

See you next year...
