I am an enthusiastic user of the EAP version of PHPStorm. The EAP version has just one drawback. It expires after about 3–4 weeks, and a new version has to be installed. I can understand that from JetBrains' point of view too. However, the version always expires at a time when it is particularly inconvenient. Since I am currently on vacation and this was getting on my nerves, I thought I would build a little helper for it. And so the PhpStorm downloader was born.
The downloader uses the Symfony Console component (like my other tool n98-magerun). The tool has exactly two commands and is very easy to install. You do need at least PHP 5.4, though. But that should no longer be a problem...
Installation
git clone https://github.com/cmuench/phpstorm-downloader.git
cd phpstorm-downloader
composer.phar install
(Note: box.phar can also be used to create a phar file, as with n98-magerun)
Usage
Downloading new PhpStorm versions
The download command determines the current version from the PhpStorm EAP page (tar.gz file only).
bin/phpstorm-downloader download
Optionally, you can specify a download directory. If none is specified, it installs under $HOME/opt.
A symlink named PhpStorm is created, which always points to the current version. For me, it looks something like this:
. ├── PhpStorm -> PhpStorm-138.826 ├── PhpStorm-138.826 └── PhpStorm-138.328
Removing old PhpStorm versions
bin/phpstorm-downloader clean
After "clean", it looks like this:
. ├── PhpStorm -> PhpStorm-138.826 └── PhpStorm-138.826
If you feel like it, you are welcome to fork the tool and add support for OSX. Have fun with it!
