Magento Cache Benchmark with n98-magerun

Anyone who gets deeper into Magento development will inevitably reach a point where caching comes into play.

If you then set up an entire server infrastructure for a Magento shop, you inevitably have to think about the performance and scalability of cache backends. There are several people in the Magento community who have already done pioneering work here. One who comes to mind is Fabrizio, who has been dealing with performance for a very long time and has already given several talks on the topic (for example at Meet Magento).

Another pioneer in caching is Colin Mollenhour. Colin has published several interesting Magento modules on github. These include (just a small selection), for example, Cm_Cache_Backend_Redis and his latest module, Cm_Cache_Backend_Mongo. His legendary talk The Fast, the Slow and the Ugly: A Magento Cache Showdown, given at MagentoImagine 2012, is also interesting. Colin wrote a tool for testing cache backends that does a great job of it. It is a Magento module (which can easily be installed in any Magento shop through modman -> also by Colin).

Now to the actual topic...

Today I had the idea of porting his tool into an n98-magerun module. Since the functionality does not really belong in the n98-magerun code thematically, I decided to put it into an external module (some time ago, I introduced n98-magerun's module system here on the blog).

The Module

Installing the module is quite simple. You just clone it through git into the user module directory.

mkdir -p ~/.n98-magerun/modules
cd ~/.n98-magerun/modules
git clone https://github.com/cmuench/magerun-module-cache-benchmark.git

Github URL: https://github.com/cmuench/magerun-module-cache-benchmark

After that, everything is ready to use.

Since I do not want to explain everything, I made a short video:

I hope someone can make use of the module. I will probably be running cache tests more often now.

Have fun...
