If you start Aqua Data Studio on Linux with 3D effects enabled through Compiz or Beryl, you may be in for an unpleasant experience.
That was certainly the case for me. The program started, but only displayed an empty gray window.
With a little "trick," I was able to start it with 3D effects enabled after all. I found the solution on fedorablog.de in an article titled "Workaround for Compiz and Java."
You simply need to export a variable through the shell. This can be done in .bashrc, for example.
I simply exported the variable in datastudio.sh.
The last two lines now look like this for me:
export AWT_TOOLKIT=MToolkit java -cp $CLASSES com.aquafold.datastudio.DataStudio
After that, Aqua Data Studio starts without any problems, complete with the nice effects. The "workaround" also works with other Java programs.
